One juice is not the same as another. The products available range from fruit juices through nectars to fruit-flavoured soft drinks. Precise information on the fruit content and other ingredients can be found on the label.
Fruit juice
Fruit juice (e.g. apple juice, orange juice, grape juice) contains 100 percent fruit. It does not contain any colouring agents or preservatives. Per-capita consumption of fruit juice in Germany totalled 27,1 litres in 2002 (28.3 litres in 2001). Fruit juice made from concentrated fruit juice is of exactly the same quality as fruit juice which has been bottled directly. Particularly in the case of such exotic fruits as oranges, mangos and passion fruits, German manufacturers have no choice but to use imported, i.e. concentrated juice. A great deal of care is taken by the German manufacturers to reproduce the original juice from the concentrate. The result is a full-bodied fruit juice containing 100 percent fruit.
Fruit nectar
Fruit nectar is primarily made from those types of fruit which contain particularly large or small amounts of fruit acid or a great deal of fruit pulp and are highly aromatic by nature. Such fruits must first be made potable with water and sugar. Nectar is produced, for example, from black currants, sour cherry, apricots, passion fruit and bananas. Nectar similarly contains neither colouring agents nor preservatives. Depending on the type of fruit concerned, nectar must contain between 25 percent and 50 percent fruit. Precise information on the percentage of fruit contained can be found on the label. Fruit nectar is also available as a reduced-calory Light product.
Fruit-flavoured drink
Like lemonade and effervescent beverages, fruit-flavoured still drinks are a refreshment or soft drink. They contain fruit juice for taste and drinking water, natural fruit flavours, sugar and possibly acid taste enhancers. The prescribed minimum fruit content must be specified on the label and varies between 6 and 30 percent, depending on the type of fruit concerned. Fruit-flavoured drinks are also available as calory-reduced versions. |
